While the work of French philosopher The purpose of this book is to remove the philosophical writings of Henry Bugbee from relative obscurity, making them more accessible to the wider public.

The end-in-view throughout has been to allow Bugbee the opportunity to speak in his own words and, when appropriate, through the words of others: those both familiar with the man as well as his philosophy. Being in Creation asks about the role of humans in the more-than-human world from the perspective of human creatureliness, a perspective that accepts as a given human finitude and limitations, as well as responsibility toward other beings and toward the whole of which they are a part. This book puts Merleau-Ponty's philosophy into dialogue with literature, evolutionary biology, and animal studies to argue for evolutionary continuity between human cultural and linguistic behaviors and the semiotic activities of other animals.

This exploration is structured against the background of the fundamental interrelation between three "bodies" in Merleau-Ponty's thought and in Christian theology: the material as such or "nature" the corporeal , the human body as a living body the corporal , and the social body the corporate—including language and tradition. Merleau-Ponty's philosophy offers a finessed and non-reductionistic understanding of the relations between these orders of bodies.

Appropriating Merleau-Ponty's thought helps one think through Christian doctrines of creation, theological anthropology, Christology, ecclesiology, and eschatology. Get A Copy. Hardcover , pages.

Groundworks: Ecological Issues in Philosophy and Theology

Sort order. I have been fascinated by the French phenomenologist Merleau-Ponty since , when my Glaswegian philosophy professor kept lamenting his early passing. Surely my long-departed mentor had red Presyterian blood coursing through his veins, in spite of the philosophical scepticism of the current Zeitgeist! But Merleau-Ponty's books are notoriously overpriced.
